Our Teacher the Buddha gave innumerable dharma teachings. For the benefit of the Listeners, he taught the Three Baskets, with the view of individual selflessness, the conduct of non-harm, and the meditation of the yogas of tranquility and insight. Those who practice these most diligently can become arhats in three lifetimes or buddhas in 100 aeons. In the Great Vehicle, there are both sutra and tantra teachings. The sutras teach the view of the two selflessnesses, the conduct of the ten transcendences and four ways of magnetizing disciples, and the thought-free meditation of the ground, path and fruition of the bodhisattvas. Through this, one can become a buddha in three innumerable aeons.

In the mantra vehicle, there are the four classes of tantra: the action tantra, performance tantra, yoga tantra and unexcelled yoga tantra. Through the action tantra, one can become a tenth level bodhisattva in eight great aeons. In the performance tantra, one can attain the tenth level in either one or three aeons. Through the yoga tantra, one can attain the tenth level in sixteen or 32 births.

In the unexcelled yoga tantra, one can receive the four empowerments—vase, secret, wisdom and word—and purify their impurities into the expanse of emptiness through the practices of the creation phase. One can take the high path that is similar to the buddhas or the low which purifies stains that is similar to the appearances of samsara. One can take the three poisons onto the path through training in the basis for purification, the purifier and the result of purification. Included in the unexcelled yoga tantra are the three classes of the Father tantra and the six of the Mother tantra. The most diligent practitioners of these can become buddhas in one lifetime.

Of the seven traditions of Hevajra, in the Kagyu lineage we practice the one passed down from Naropa and Maitripa to Marpa the translator. As it is said:

The emanation of the heruka Hevajra,
The son of the mahāsiddhas Naro and Maitripa,
The flame of all the Kagyus, Chökyi Lodrö
From Lhodrak: I prostrate at your feet.

One of Marpa’s close disciples was Lama Ngokpa, who realized the Dharma Body Vajradhara and then in order to benefit beings consciously took birth as Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche, a holder of the vajra of true meaning. The opportunity to receive an empowerment and teachings from such a master is a chance to receive the blessings and power of the lineage.
